PGR STUDENTS

The SLSA welcomes postgraduate student members. We recognise the difficulties and pressures on students as they set out to establish themselves as serious academic researchers. For this reason, the SLSA provides practical help for students in several ways.

Student membership benefits

Note: Student membership is available exclusively to postgraduate research (PGR) students.

Student membership fee

Membership for students costs just £25 per year and the first year's membership is free.

SLSA PGR Reps

Student members have their own representatives on the SLSA Board. The student reps are members of the SLSA Board. Postgraduates are welcome to contact the reps about SLSA-related matters.

SLSA Postgraduate Conference

Students are invited to a free annual Postgraduate Conference which consists of two days of workshops and seminars conducted by volunteers drawn from the SLSA membership. The conference moves around the UK but was hosted online during the pandemic. Look out for an announcement in the weekly ebulletin in the autumn when registration opens.

SLSA Annual Conference

Students can attend the SLSA Annual Conference at a heavily discounted rate.

Bursaries

Bursaries are available for student members to offset some of the costs of attending our Annual Conference and other selected events. Details of bursaries for the Annual Conference are organised by the conference host institution each year.

SLSA PGR Online Co-writing Session

Held three times per year, this virtual writing space offers PGR members an opportunity to come together online to create a focused and supportive space for writing or working on our research. Look out for announcements in the weekly ebulletin.

Other one-off events dedicated PGR events

Look out for details of special one-off events organised by our PGR Reps like the Writing Retreat that took place in November 2025.
