PROJECTS

As part of its role in the wider academic community, from time to time the SLSA Board of Trustees partners with other organisations or carries out one-off projects of its own in the interests of its members or to contribute to debates or consultations. Here, we present details of our current and most recent projects.

PGR Writing Group

In 2023, the SLSA Board piloted an online writing group to create a space for SLSA PGRs to write, connect and build a supportive community in the UK and beyond. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and the project was repeated in 2024–2025 with the PGR Reps working on ways to make the experience more engaging. These included inviting a guest speaker to the February meeting and running a hybrid session at QMUL in May. Look out for announcements of the 2025–2026 programme via the SLSA ebulletin. If you would like further information about the Writing Group, contact the PGR Reps.

Mentoring Scheme

The SLSA’s mentoring scheme has returned for the 2025–2026 academic year and we would love for you to be involved. This scheme forms part of delivering our EDI strategy to widen participation in the SLSA and the socio-legal community, including by members employed on precarious contracts.

See the Mentoring page for details. Closing date: 31 July 2025

EDI Survey Report 2025

In line with a commitment we made in 2021 to collect additional data at regular intervals, we launched our second EDI survey in October 2024. It closed on 13 December 2024. Many thanks to all those who took part. This report presents the results and analysis of the survey responses and plans for taking our EDI strategy forward based on member input. We welcome additional feedback from, and dialogue with our members, and look forward to working together to build an ever more diverse and inclusive socio-legal community.

Socio-Legal Education

We are leading a national project with the Association of Law Teachers and the University of Portsmouth to examine how socio-legal perspectives are taught in UK law schools. Drawing on our 2024 survey, the project highlights current practices, challenges, and ways to support more socially engaged legal education.

SLSA Precarious Employment Survey

The SLSA is concerned about the increase in precarious working among the socio-legal community. We are committed to supporting colleagues and documenting their situation and experiences. In late 2022, the SLSA Board conducted a survey to collect data about members' experiences of precarious employment. The survey report includes comprehensive details of the survey, methodology and response rates, analysis of the results and reflections on next steps: SLSA Precarious Employment Survey Report April 2023.
