Eligibility:  If someone has paid their membership for the current year, but hasn’t paid for the previous year, can they be eligible for the article or book prize?

Accepted Answer

Nominees and nominators need to be fully paid-up members for the year of nomination. Fees are payable through the members’ area of the website. Contact the SLSA Administrator for queries about membership fees. If your fees are due during the period of the competition (between October and end of March), you will be asked to pay your future fees prior to acceptance of your application. If a nominee or nominator is not a member in the year of nomination, they are welcome to join immediately.

Can PhD or LLM theses themselves qualify as a ‘nominated publication’ for the book or article prize?

Accepted Answer

No. All nominated works must be publications. Books and articles by eligible authors will be considered provided that they have been published in the 12 months up to 30 September preceding the closing date for nominations and they have not been nominated in an earlier SLSA prize competition.

For the book prizes, can a digital copy of the ‘proofs’ be submitted instead of the final published work?

Yes.

Can a work ‘in press’ qualify as a ‘nominated publication’ for the book or article prize?

Can publishers submit nominations for the book or article prizes?

Accepted Answer

Yes, publishers can submit nominations for the book or article prizes. Publishers can request a free online membership subscription that will enable them to nominate using our online form. Please contact the SLSA Administrator to discuss.

Nominations from publishers require confirmation that the author has consented to the nomination, indicating that the nominated author is a fully paid-up member of the SLSA, and explaining why the nominated work is socio-legal.

Question 7

Is the place of publication relevant in calculating the requisite 12-month period for the book and article prizes?

Accepted Answer

No. The rule requires the date of first publication of the book or article to be within the 12 months up to 30 September. The place of publication is not relevant in this regard.
